Wagering requirements explained, with a calculator

Wagering, playthrough, rollover: three words for one rule. It's the multiple of the bonus (or of what the bonus won) that you must bet before a withdrawal is allowed. Here: how it's counted, what it costs you in expected loss, why "no wagering" offers are rare, and a calculator for the offer in front of you.

How the count works

The cashier keeps a running total of everything you stake while the bonus is active. Every bet adds its full amount to the total, win or lose; the winnings from a bet go back into your balance and can be staked again. When the total reaches the multiple, the bar is full and the remaining balance, up to the max cashout, can be withdrawn.

Two things follow. First, the size of each bet doesn’t change the total you must reach, only how many bets it takes: $600 is 2,400 spins at $0.25 or 60 spins at $10. Second, the game’s return sets how fast the balance drains while you reach it. A 96% pokie hands back $0.96 of every dollar on average, so $600 of turnover costs about $24, more than double a $10 chip.

Why the expected loss beats the bonus

The expected loss is (1 − RTP) × wagering × bonus. For a free chip at 60× on a 96% game that’s 0.04 × 60 × $10 = $24. The break-even RTP, where the expected loss equals the chip, is 1 − 1/60, about 98.3%. Very few pokies pay that; the RTG games most spin packs land on don’t publish a figure at all, and reviewers quote 95–97% for them.

This doesn’t mean no one ever cashes out. High-volatility games finish the bar on a few big runs and lose it on most of the others; the average is what the receipt shows. The test log on the home page is where those individual runs are recorded.

The clauses that sit next to the multiple

  • Max bet. Ozwin and Uptown Pokies: $10, and “betting above $10 during a bonus playthrough will result in any promotion winnings voided” [1] [2]. It’s the most common way a run is lost without the balance reaching zero.
  • Game contribution. Some games count partly or not at all. Table games usually count less; some pokies with a high RTP are excluded. If the offer names a game, stay on it.
  • Time limit. Free bonuses often expire in days. The bar resets to nothing when the bonus does.
  • One free bonus at a time. Both sets of terms void winnings from a free bonus taken while another free bonus is active or before a deposit has been made in between; the exact rule is in the casino’s terms.

“No wagering” bonuses: what actually exists

Searches for “no wager no deposit bonus Australia” mostly land on pages that misread “wager-free spins” (winnings paid as cash after the spins) as “no wagering on the bonus”. The two aren’t the same, and neither appears in the general terms of the RTG casinos we read. When a no-wagering offer is real it’s small, capped and short: a few dollars of cash with a $20 ceiling, for a day. If you find one, the max cashout page tells you how to read the cap.

Put in the offer's numbers

Enter the numbers from the terms.

The calculator assumes the multiple is counted on the bonus figure you enter. For free spins, enter what the spins won (or their stake value as a stand-in) rather than the number of spins; the free spins page explains why.

For

  • It's arithmetic, printed in the terms: you can know the cost before you register.
  • Bets at the minimum stake count the same as big ones, so the run can be slow and cheap.

Against

  • At 60× the expected loss is bigger than the bonus at any RTP below about 98%, so the average run ends at zero.
  • A single bet over the $10 maximum voids the winnings; the cashier doesn't stop you.
  • Some games count less than 100% towards the bar or don't count at all; the list lives in the terms, not on the game.

My verdict

Read the multiple and what it's counted on, then run the numbers below. If the expected loss on the wagering is more than twice the bonus, which it is at 60× on a 96% game, treat the bonus as a free look rather than as money. I'd only spend real time on a free bonus with a multiple of 40× or lower, and I've yet to see one in the terms of an RTG casino that takes Australians.

Questions people ask

What does 60× wagering mean?

That you must place bets totalling 60 times the bonus before you can withdraw. A $10 chip at 60× is $600 of bets. Wins along the way go back into the balance and are bet again; only the total staked counts.

Is wagering counted on the bonus or on the winnings?

On a free chip, usually the chip itself. On free spins, on what the spins won, since the spins themselves are the bonus. The terms we read at Ozwin and Uptown Pokies say "free bonuses must be wagered 60 times"; for spins the casino applies that to the winnings.

Do all pokies count towards wagering?

Not always. Casinos list games that contribute less or nothing, and some bonuses are limited to one game. Check the promotion's own page and the general terms; if a game isn't listed, ask support before you play it.

What happens if I bet more than the max bet?

At Ozwin and Uptown Pokies, the terms say betting above $10 during a bonus playthrough voids the promotion winnings. The cashier doesn't warn you, so set the bet before the first spin and don't touch it.

Are there no deposit bonuses with no wagering in Australia?

Rarely, and we haven't seen one in the terms of an RTG casino that takes Australians. Where they exist, the max cashout is usually tiny and the offer is short-lived. Treat "no wager" as something to verify in the terms, not in the banner.
